English is at the heart of our curriculum.

At Wyborne Primary School we believe that literacy and communication are key life skills. Through our English curriculum and our core text approach, we will help children to develop the skills and knowledge that will enable them to communicate effectively and creatively through spoken and written language and equip them with the skills to become lifelong learners. We aim to enable our pupils to enjoy and appreciate literature and its rich variety.

Reading:

Our belief is that reading is paramount, and it is a key driver for our curriculum.

It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are fluent, independent and confident readers across the curriculum preparing them well for their move to secondary education. We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live; to establish an appreciation and passion for reading; to gain knowledge across the curriculum; and to develop their inference and comprehension skills. We are committed to providing vocabulary-rich, challenging and enjoyable reading material for all of our pupils.

Writing:

At our school, writing is a crucial part of our curriculum. All children from Foundation Stage to Year 6 are provided with many opportunities to develop and apply their writing skills across the curriculum. Our intention is for pupils to be able to plan, revise and evaluate their writing. To be able to do this effectively, pupils will focus on developing fluent handwriting skills and effective composition. They will also develop an awareness of the audience, purpose and context, and an increasingly wide knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. We also intend for pupils to leave school being able to use fluent, legible and speedy handwriting. Our pupils will develop a love and passion for writing as they experience a range of teaching approaches and opportunities for purposeful writing.

Our pupils are exposed to a variety of authors and text types from EYFS through to Year 6. They are taught the basic skills of literacy through exciting, sequenced lessons planned by our enthusiastic teachers, who model reading for pleasure and high-quality writing. Visits from authors as well as being involved with a variety of innovative projects raise expectations and broaden experiences. Children are able to apply their skills in other areas of the curriculum. Finally, children’s work is valued and showcased through high quality display in classrooms, common areas throughout the school and in the local community.
